Page 1 of 2 The NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft is expected to be launched to the Moon before the end of 2008. It is the first mission of the Lunar Precursor Robotic Program (LPRP). The LPRP program is a series of unmanned (robotic) spacecraft missions that NASA is flying to the Moon in preparation for its later human exploration of the Moon beginning in the middle of the 2010s. The second LPRP mission is the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) spacecraft. The LRO mission is to identify potential landing sites for future manned Orion missions (under the new NASA Constellation program), to identify lunar resources, and to study the lunar radiation environment. When you submit your name to the “Send Your Name to the Moon” project, your name will be included with all the other submitted names in a large database and placed on a microchip that will be integrated onto the spacecraft. The deadline to submit your name is JUNE 27, 2008. You should do it as soon as possible so your name doesn’t get left back on Earth when everyone else’s name is circling the Moon. You just might be asking yourself at this time: How do I “Send My Name to the Moon”? Please read on. |
