Virginia Gurley, senior medical director of Healthways, said that the results presented in the study can better inform politicians and the health care industry on appropriate health care policy in the United States, along with the issues that the American people have concerning U.S. health care.

Gurley stated in Reuters, "We [the United States] are having trouble competing because of the cost of health care and its effects.” [Reuters: “Many Americans struggling in life, survey finds”]

In addition, Julie Gerberding, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stated, “We [the United States] are investing the most of any country in the world -- $2 trillion -- and we rank 37th in terms of health.” [Reuters]

Gerberding hopes the study will help to develop a better strategy for health care in the United States.

The researchers for the study are now in the process of breaking down the results into additional categories, such as amount of exercise, various occupations, commute time to work, and other such factors that might lead to happiness or lack of happiness in ones’ lives.

Healthways is a health consulting organization that works with companies to improve the health of workers. Global polling organization Gallup funded the survey and research.
