Vista SP1, XP SP3 distribution glitch E-mail
by Stephen Withers
Wednesday, 30 April 2008
Incompatibilities with a Microsoft application are holding up the automatic distribution of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 3.

While it still available for manual download from Microsoft's web site, Vista SP1 has been temporarily withdrawn from Windows Update. And while XP SP3 was completed last week and was due to be delivered via Windows Update by now, that process has been delayed.

The problem concerns compatibility with Microsoft Dynamics RMS, the company's software for small to medium retail chains.

The first step will be to adjust Windows Update so it checks for the presence of Dynamics RMS before offering Vista SP1 or XP SP3. Once that is in place, the service packs will be offered for automatic delivery. No date has been announced.

Microsoft is also working on a fix for the Dynamics RMS problem. In the meantime, the company recommends that users do not manually install Vista SP1 or XP SP3.
