According to Bloomberg, recent price cuts in Europe “led Xbox 360 sales to double”, with Bloomberg also quoting Microsoft statements which gave the new pricing – the ‘basic’ model Xbox 360 drops 17% in Taiwan to NT $10,360 (US $340), and an 11% price drop in Hong Kong. Prices are down 5.1% in South Korea (369,000 won or US $369) and a there’s been a whopping 20% drop in Singapore down to S$499 (or US $366) – but India gets no price cut, at least, not for now. Ars Technica quoted a Microsoft statement seen in the (subscription only) Wall Street Journal, saying: "This price drop is part of Microsoft's ongoing strategy to bring Xbox's high-definition gaming and entertainment experience to an even wider user base. If and when price adjustments in other regions make sense, we will be sure to keep you informed, but we have nothing to announce at this time.” Asia is a lucrative growth market for almost any goods or services, and Microsoft wants to ensure the Xbox 360 is a success in those areas. More sales means more reasons for developers to write software/games for the Xbox 360, and helps Microsoft fight off the lots-of-fun Nintendo Wii, and Sony’s next-gen entrant, the PS3. Just how successful Microsoft will be at playing the game is yet to be seen, and while it’ll be some time before it happens again, these prices cuts clearly won’t be the last.
