Page 1 of 2 Of course, gaming is huge – it makes more money than Hollywood, and has for years. But all the gaming action is happening in the console space, although PC gaming is still huge because of the massive installed based of PCs. Yes, there’s there the NVIDIA 8800 GS graphics card option with 512MB of RAM that would make gamers most happy indeed, but would a dedicated PC gamer really buy an iMac to play games? Especially when gamers like to create their own custom, tricked-out rigs? Kingsley-Hughes wonders whether or not a gaming push will come for the Mac OS X platform, or whether Apple just wants to make PC gaming easier thanks to Boot Camp. Well... 3.06Ghz and an NVIDIA 8800 GS graphics card will certainly make suitably equipped new iMac owners very happy – but only if they want to use their Mac as a PC. Yes, there are games for the Mac, but even though Apple has sold more iMacs than ever, it’s still massively outnumbered by PCs. I think Apple has gone to all the trouble of upgrading the iMac range because it needed to be upgraded, and because Apple wants a point of difference with PC makers, who will surely now be clamouring for the 3.06Ghz chip, too. Of course there is no quad core iMac. Yes, there are quad core Mac Pros, but the iMac, which uses some mobile parts, isn’t really designed for a quad core processor. Surely true gamers would go for quad core heaven, whether AMD or Intel, and give the iMac a wide berth. So, could I be wrong? Please read onto page 2. |
