Paymate issues open challenge to eBay over buyer and sell protection E-mail

Complaints have been levied in the past against PayPal in cases where funds were transferred back to buyers without goods being returned to sellers, According to Mr Rao, this would not happen with Paymate.

"We have a process where we tell the buyer that they have got to give us time to talk with the seller," said Mr Rao.

"In a lot of cases the shipment might simply have been delayed. If the goods have been shipped we will try to find out where they are and we tell the seller to give us evidence of tracking. We had a case where one of our sellers who sent a $2500 handbag to a woman in Florida who claimed she never got it. But we had evidence of someone signing for it at her house. It took us nine months to actually sort it out with the two banks involved, our bank and the buyer's bank in the US. Ultimately the woman in Florida said yes OK she did get it but her friend picked it up or whatever."

"Often nobody is going to follow something like that through for that long to fight for their seller. This particular seller now loves us and is happy to pay our fees because she has hard evidence of our seller protection."

"If we do have a situation where genuinely the buyer does not receive goods then we will shut down the seller in the first instance if they're not willing to sort it out and refund the money. But otherwise we stand in for the seller because as far as the buyer is concerned they've used our service and we refund their money."

Paymate offers a Complaints and Disputes process for Paymate payments on any platform, including eBay, that both buyers and sellers can use to escalate issues with senior management and finally with an independent arbitrator, the Banking & Financial Services Ombudsman. 

Paymate claims the number of cases submitted to the independent Banking & Financial Services Ombudsman has been nine (9) since October 2005, all resolved in their favour, against the hundreds of thousands of payments processed by Paymate in that period.  Only three related to a transaction on eBay.

According to Mr Rao, eBay Australia is blatantly and deliberately shutting down all payments competition on its site in its attempt to enforce PayPal exclusivity.
