The prospect of a future 3G iPhone with haptic, vibrating feedback when you press keys – although just an uncomfirmed rumour – is enticing, too, as it will help make the lack of ‘real’ keys even more of a non issue than it already is. But it doesn’t really matter what system I am using – a keyboard, a T9 input system, tiny QWERTY keyboards or virtual keys on an iPhone – I’ve managed to learn how to type very quickly on them all. And so would anyone with daily use. It’s just a natural part of being human – you get faster and more proficient at anything you do on a regular basis. So, I’m glad to see that Blackberry is further embracing 3G, and modern features, like video calling, on their latest models. I’m glad to see they’re still taking the fight to Windows Mobile devices, Symbian devices and iPhones with more new models – the existing models have been on the market for quite some time now, and as with any technology, do need a refresh. I’m even glad to see that there is a touch screen Blackberry on the way, aiming to give Apple a run for its money in the handheld über-touchscreen-gadget stakes. But RIM really will have to rev up the R&D – just like everyone else is – to withstand the 3G iPhone onslaught. Apple has gone from nothing to being a major player in a market it had no presence in just a few short months ago. That’s pretty outstanding. Just like the first generation iPhone. Still, RIM is pretty entrenched in its corporate markets, and will be hard to shift. Today’s phone makers are living in more interesting times than they could ever have imagined!
