Windows Vista SP1 automatic updates have started – if you’re lucky PDF E-mail

Some commenters to the Windows Vista Team Blog asked questions on when driver updates for those – like me – with affected drivers – would see them appear for download, so a safe update to Vista SP1 could begin.

Unfortunately, it seems the SP1 wait for affected customers just keeps on keeping on, with absolutely zero firm dates at all, something that is incredibly frustrating, especially if you are someone – like me – who really wants to install SP1 to give it a go.

Windows Vista Team Blogger, Brandon LeBlanc, said in response to a question about the missing drivers: “... Eventually new drivers will be provided, come down Windows Update and John Q. Public will install them and install SP1.”

LeBlanc explained to another commenter that: “... the blockers in place to prevent SP1 from installing on PCs with problematic drivers is only a temporary block. Eventually updated drivers will be provided that will then let users install SP1 through Windows Update. So to say it won't ever auto-update for you isn't true.”

LeBlanc also said: “... Microsoft is working with OEM's to provide updated device drivers that will come across through Windows Update and then let you install SP1.”

LeBlanc’s reassurance that updated drivers would be coming is nice, but it’s a shame there is no specific time frame.

So, the wait for SP1 continues... at least for some. Thank goodness Vista RTM is working fine, but all those speed improvements I’ve heard about in copying and general operation are just that – things I’ve heard about.

Microsoft, please work with your OEMs to get those drivers fixed faster. Honestly, how hard could it be? Clearly it’s very difficult or there would be no more waiting.

Sigh. The Vista SP1 saga continues. First, it was “Vista SP1: A New Hope”. Then it was “Vista SP1: The Dodgy Drivers Strike Back”.

Waiting for the premiere of “Vista SP1: Return of the Decent Drivers” had better not morph into something called “Windows 7: A Whole New OS!”.

I want my SP1 dammit, and I can’t get it. At least I have Ubuntu’s Hardy Heron 8.04 to play with and explore in the meantime. Hint hint, Microsoft. Hint hint.
