3G iPhone to come June 9 at WWDC? E-mail

PC World also quoted Wu saying that 2G iPhone shortages at this stage of the game are consistent with Apple’s "tendency to wind down inventory ahead of an update".

The WWDC is also the event that is expected to see the availability of not only an iPhone 2.0 in hardware, but the iPhone 2.0 firmware and software.

This is the version of the iPhone software that will feature a third party software store, called the App Store, and which will also allow third party developers to create approved applications that can be either sold – or given away free – with 30% of any software sales going straight into Apple’s back pocket.

Should any 3G iPhone be announced, the world is expecting that it will be a 3.5G HSDPA capable model, running on both the 850Mhz frequency – the one that AT&T is installing in the US – and also the 2100Mhz frequency, the 3.5G standard in use by many other telcos worldwide.

Should the 3G iPhone contain an 850Mhz chip, as expected, it will give Apple the opportunity to partner with Australia’s dominant telco, Telstra, in launching the 3G iPhone down under.

Rumours have placed Steve Jobs at the opening of Australia’s first official Apple store in Sydney, Australia – heavily modelled upon the flagship Apple stores in the US – where Jobs will launch the 3G iPhone in style, surrounded by Apple faithful, the media and Telstra executives.

But all this is, sadly, still speculation and rumour. June 9 is still at least six weeks away.

It’s going to be the longest six weeks ever!
