Hardy Heron – my odd first experiences E-mail

I rebooted the computer again, in a most calm and serene manner, despite my incredulity at Ubutnu's apparently flakiness, and up loaded Hardy Heron for a third time.

But instead of trying the video, I tried connecting Ubuntu – via Wi-Fi - to the WMWifiRouter software I’d installed on my Windows Mobile 6 smartphone. After a number of different attempts with different keys, etc – I couldn’t make it work.

The reason for doing this was because video could wait, and I wanted to see how easy it would be to connect to my phone's wireless Internet capabilities, but wasn't having any simple success.

So, I also tried activating ‘Internet Sharing’ on the WM6 device, not expecting it to work (it didn’t), as well as trying to get Ubuntu to connect to the phone via Bluetooth.

But while I could get the phone to see the computer, I couldn’t make Ubuntu connect to the Internet via the phone, even though there was a spot to type in a GPRS/3G APN (access point name).

All this happened last night, and it was getting late. I rebooted back to Vista, and felt at home once more. Sure, Ubuntu had loaded, and had worked, but some very simple stuff caused it to freeze solid, and simple Internet connectivity actions in Windows weren’t working in Heron.

Now, I haven’t given up on the Hardy Heron. But this morning, and throughout today, I’ve had real work to do.

I had planned on writing this article from within Hardy Heron, but I’m sitting at my favourite cafe, and as I couldn’t get Ubuntu to talk to my phone, and this cafe doesn’t have Wi-Fi, I’m instead writing it on Vista, connected to a 3.5G wireless Expresscard datacard, which I know works perfectly with Vista or XP.

So, Hardy Heron, after three attempts, you (finally) successfully loaded onto my computer. You’ve booted up, and you look very smooth. I’d had a few issues, but my Ubuntu experiences have only just begun, and I’m determined to find answers to my problems and to make it work.

Ubuntu has been on my computer for less than 24 hours, but I’m in. Popping the Linux cherry was a painful experience, that’s for sure – it didn’t even look like it was going to work at all! I still don't know why it worked the third time - but not the first two. But at least it worked which is more than some people can say, at least from what I've read online about different versions of Ubuntu, from the new 8.04 down.

So, in the end, despite some issues, it feels good to be a Linux virgin no longer... and I can happily say... I’m keen to try it again! Ubuntu is a willing partner after all, and although I predicted we might not be on speaking terms after a week, and we almost didn't get past the first hour, there is hope for us yet.

So... more from the world of Ubuntu’s Hardy Heron... soon!
