Got Windows XP and feel like breaking the law? We don’t recommend it, for it’s illegal, but XP SP3 is reportedly available on torrent sites – and reportedly will pass the WGA check. Naughty!

If you haven’t yet upgraded to Windows Vista, Mac OS X or Ubuntu Linux, and you’re still using Windows XP, chances are you’ll have heard about Service Pack 3, or SP3, a stack of updates from Microsoft which are reported to speed up XP by 10%, introduce some of Vista’s heightened security and generally make things better.

Engadget is reporting that its readers are seeing XP SP3 available on torrent networks, and are supposedly able to bypass WGA (Windows Genuine Checks) that would only worry people will pirate versions of Windows XP in the first place.

Now, we at iTWire do not condone, recommend, prescribe or suggest that piracy is a good idea. You have no idea how the XP SP3 update on torrent sites has been modified – it might come with a not so tasty side serving of malware.

And even though the XP SP3 update is free, copying it is piracy. So, you’ve been warned.

The bona-fide XP SP3 download will go live on April 29, a mere three days from today, and chances are, even though XP SP3 has received stunningly good coverage in comparison with Vista SP1, the ‘other’ service pack that Microsoft has been working on, chances are there will be problems.

The question you need to ask yourself, as an otherwise happy XP SP2 user, is... do you feel lucky? Well, do you?

If you do, and are willing to see firsthand what effect Windows XP SP3 has on your system, on April 29 of course, then you will download the update and fearlessly install it to your system.

But if history is any guide, updates to operating systems are not smooth affairs. XP SP3 might work perfectly on everyone else’s computer, but you might be the one unlucky person that has some glitch happen which renders things FUBAR.

So, if you are willing to take the chance to be one of the first to upgrade to SP3, rather than waiting a few days or even weeks to see where the worldwide SP3 Windows update fallout falls, what should you do first? Please read onto page 2.
