Apple updates its controversial updater E-mail

A new version of Apple Software Update for Windows may head off some of the criticism recently levelled at the company.

Apple sparked controversy when it made a new Windows version of Safari available through the Apple Software Update utility even if a previous version of the web browser hadn't already been installed.

To make matters worse, ASU automatically selects all available updates, leading some unobservant users to complain that they had been tricked into installing the application.

Version 2.1.0.110 takes a different tack and displays two separate lists of software: one for updates to installed programs, another for new software.

The new version can be installed via Apple Software Update, and is presumably being bundled with subsequent versions of software such as iTunes and Safari.
