Page 2 of 2 Vinasat-1 becomes the thirty-ninth space vehicle produced by Lockheed Martin and launched by Arianespace. It is based on the reliable Lockheed Martin A2100A spacecraft platform. In fact, currently, Vietnam is renting communications services from other countries. With its own satellite Vietnam will be able to provide better and less expensive services to its citizens. It is expected to save the country approximately US$10 million each year. Many organizations in Vietnam have already registered to use the communications services provided by the Vinasat-1 satellite. For instance, Ho Chi Minh City Television has already agreed to rent twenty television channels on the satellite for distribution in Southeast Asia. Vinasat-1, with an operational lifespan of between 15 to 20 years, has twenty transponders onboard (12 Ku-band transponders and eight C-band transponders) that have the ability to transmit ten thousand voice, Internet, and data channels or one hundred twenty television channels. The launch was delayed due to extended negotiations for an acceptable position in geostationary orbit. Final approval was reached on May 12, 2006. Please read about the negotiations at Thanhnien News: “Vietnam’s first satellite launch delayed till 2008.”
