Page 1 of 2 Despite the fact I have readers who like to make fun of my good experiences with Vista, and despite the fact I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of Ubuntu’s Hardy Heron in a couple of days’ time, the fact is that most of the Windows-using world is still on Windows XP. With XP3 due very soon, the reasons to stay with XP, whether on existing or brand new hardware, are stronger than ever. Vista SP1 has only just been released, and even though the critics do say that it does speed up some Vista scenarios, while not introducing any new features and even removing the ‘Search’ button from the right hand side of the Vista’s Start ‘orb’ button panel, users want choice. They want choice from you, Microsoft. They already have the choice to go to Mac OS X and Linux, but you’re not a monopoly for nothing – many people know little else but Windows, and they’re happy – at least for now – staying with the operating system they know and like. I’d say ‘love’ but there aren’t too many people that ‘love’ Windows, even XP which is supremely compatible and very mature, especially with XP3 just around the corner. Yes, you’ve extended Windows XP for ‘ultra low cost PCs’ until 2010. But why not extend XP’s general lifespan for at least a year, if not longer? Just because Vista SP1 has landed doesn’t mean everyone is rushing to get it. People want to know what it will be like, and are willing to allow others to test it for a bit longer, first.
