Page 2 of 2 Ubuntu is the version of Linux that has shown the most consumer promise over the last few years. Another contender is Xandros Linux, most famously deployed as the version of Linux available in the ASUS Eee PC, the contender for the most popular Linux computer of all time, even commercially available in retail stores! But Ubuntu has shown the most promise as the world’s best Windows-like version of Linux. Windows-like? Yes, in terms of ease of use, in terms of overall compatibility with hardware and in terms of popularity. Ubuntu has had a hard road to travel. It’s popularity is still dwarfed by that of various Windows versions. But Hardy Heron is the version that will make or break Ubuntu as a true contender, or just a Windows wannabe. Although a beta version of Ubuntu 8.04 has been available for a few weeks now, and a release candidate version only released in the last couple of days, given the late April release of the ‘final’ version, I’ve decided to wait before giving it a go, and now that wait is nearly over. Just like most everyone else, I like choice. It doesn’t have to be, and shouldn’t be, an exclusively Windows world. Yes, we have Mac OS X, and various other flavours of Linux, amongst other operating systems. But Ubuntu has the chance to be the true breakthrough Linux OS to really gain widespread popularity, forcing Microsoft and Apple to work even harder to keep us interested in, and using, Windows and Mac OS X. Hardy Heron is nearly here, and my new journey into Ubuntu Linux awaits. I’m tired of waiting at the basecamp for the adventure to start. But in four days it will be here, and a potential new love affair with Linux will begin. I hope there’s a spark during our first encounter and that we really hit it off... but time will tell – we might not be speaking to each other after the first week! But unlike many characters in the Star Wars universe who always profess to ‘have a bad feeling about this’... I’ve got a good feeling about it, instead. Don’t let me down, Ubuntu!
