Google, Salesforce.com snuggle up closer E-mail
by Stephen Withers
Monday, 14 April 2008
Google and Salesforce.com both offer web-delivered applications. They both compete with Microsoft. And now they're working more closely together.

Salesforce.com users are about to get the opportunity to use Google Apps and other online tools (including email and chat) provided by the search and advertising giant from within the CRM application.

Google's software will be available to Salesforce.com users at no charge (just as it is generally free), but Salesforce.com will offer phone support and other additional services for $US10 per user per month.

The idea of integrating the two company's web offerings was been attributed to feedback from Salesforce.com users.

One example of the way the applications might work together is that an email sent to a customer could be automatically recorded in Salesforce.com's CRM application.

The move mirrors the way Salesforce.com previously delivered offline integration with Microsoft Office and Outlook, but highlights a perceived shift away from the traditional desktop model towards cloud computing. Microsoft also sells its own CRM software.

This announcement has also triggered fresh speculation that Google may acquire Salesforce.com, and AP reports that executives from both companies chose not to comment when asked about the possibility.

Google and Salesforce.com formed a strategic alliance in June 2007, at that stage focussing mainly on integrating AdWords with the CRM application. Salesforce.com was also one of the original companies to commit to the OpenSocial APIs designed to allow applications to run on multiple social networking sites.
