India-based Satyam is establishing a technology and learning centre at the Geelong Technology Precinct.

The 10 hectare campus is expected to accommodate 2000 employees within a few years. Activities will include software development, training, and research and development.

The company currently has "over 1400 associates serving Australia" according to company officials.

"The Geelong campus is an important component of our long-term initiative to build new centres of excellence, in strategic locations, around the globe," said B Rama Raju, co-founder and managing director of Satyam.

"Geelong was selected as the location for its highly skilled ICT talent, excellent infrastructure and transport links to Melbourne. The support of the Victorian Government, the Geelong City Council and the collaboration activities with Deakin University directly influenced our decision," he added.

Those collaboration activities will include staff exchange, work integrated learning for students, joint research activities and a graduate employment program.

Victorian premier John Brumby, who joined Rama Raju for the centre's official opening ceremony, welcomed the project. "Economic modelling estimates that the Satyam Technology and Learning Centre will significantly boost Victoria's economy," he said.

The precinct is operated by Deakin University at its Waurn Ponds campus, and was opened in 2004 by Brumby's predecessor, Steve Bracks. Other areas of activity include advanced materials manufacturing, textiles research, cool climate wine science, pharmaceuticals, and water resource management. Earlier this year, the state government provided Deakin University with a $A6 million grant to build a new design and manufacturing research centre at the precinct.
