Australia to get world’s first truly unlocked 3G iPhone? E-mail

Agius speculates that as Australia is a small market, with telcos unwilling to bow to Apple’s exclusivity policies that see Apple getting a chunk of revenue from the carrier (as happens in the US, UK, Germany and France), Apple will let all the telcos have access.

If this is remotely true, it would mean that Aussie telcos, who all have a 3G network in Australia, would fight it out to offer the best and most generous iPhone voice and data plan to get the most customers. That would be a great outcome, if true.

There’d also be no need for a contract lock-in, although most carriers love to offer them, and probably would still try to do so, while also selling iPhones without a contract, if Apple lets them do this.

Agius/"decryption" speculates that “Perhaps Apple have learned that there's no point holding the iPhone back to a certain provider, as we're all unlocking them anyway and are using Australia as a test-bed for rolling it out elsewhere due to Australia's high adoption rate of mobile phones and new technology, but our small market that won't hurt them if it fails.”

Also Australia would apparently, according to Agius be the only country where regular Apple resellers would also be allowed to sell the iPhone, unlike other iPhone countries where only authorised resellers have iPhone selling privileges.

Once again, if any of this is true, it would be the perfect scenario for Australians, many of whom do not like the idea of being forced to choose only one carrier, a sentiment that is clearly shared by many worldwide too.

Please read onto page 3, where you'll find a link to a very reputable Australian Mac source that is independently reporting the same news from unnamed Mac resellers!
