Richards quotes a retailer who said "Both the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii appeal to women and families and with Sony now winning the HD format war we can also sell the PS3 as a Blu ray (sic) player. This will allow us to also sell Blu ray (sic) content".

Richards then quotes a Melbourne based retailer who said: "The Xbox 360 is dead. We are stocking it because of our relationship with Microsoft however all our energy and marketing is going into the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii unless Microsoft come up with something new or additional marketing dollars. Halo 3 was big on the Xbox but that was about it. They have tried discounting and value add offers and even that is not working. We are even thinking of dumping the console all together".

Sadly, that was it. No more quotes from retailers, no more evidence that the survey went beyond speaking to two unidentified people. If there are more quotes, more information on the questions the survey asked, more information on anything, it would be interesting to see.

Page two of Richard’s article goes on to quote a European Sony Playstation representative who talks up the PS3’s upcoming 2008 software library, and the PS3’s network gaming capabilities, something that Microsoft would no doubt do too, had Richards given them the chance before using a third party quote to dub the Xbox 360 ‘dead’.

So, we decided to contact Microsoft in Australia to get their side of the story.

Mariana Cidade, PR Manager of the Entertainment & Devices Division at Microsoft Australia, told iTWire that: “We are happy with where we are in the market right now. We’re significantly ahead of where we planned to be this financial year, and selling well both on the software and hardware side.”

In terms of games, which was one of the concerns raised in the survey, Cidade says: “We have a great line-up of games coming up. For core gamers we have titles like Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Too Human, Halo Wars etc, while casual or potential gamers will enjoy the likes of Banjo Kazooie, Guitar Hero 4, Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution, as well as a number of other really exciting titles we haven’t announced yet.”

On the topic of networked, online gaming, Cidade notes that: “We have over 10 million members on Xbox LIVE globally, more than half of which are subscribed to the premium Gold service. That’s the largest social network on a video gaming console.”

And on the topic of retailer support, Cidade said that: “Our retailers are excited about our current and upcoming offers, and we’re looking forward to another bumper year.”

Please read onto page 3 for some more interested stats from Cidade, quoting market research experts GFK.
