Page 2 of 4 Mario Rivas, AMD’s executive veep of the computing solutions group enthused that: "These new AMD Phenom X4 processors unlock even greater visual computing performance to showcase the unparalleled scalability of the AMD enthusiast platform.” AMD’s ‘true’ quad-core processor technology has been a long time coming, with Intel able to offer two dual-core processors packaged together as a quad-core for some time now, leapfrogging AMD in sales and performance while the world waited for AMD to get their ‘true’ quad-core act together. That said, it has finally arrived, with AMD choosing the week before Intel’s IDF (developer forum) to no doubt try and generate a maximum amount of PR and buzz before the IDF onslaught of new Intel announcements begins next week. AMD say these are the “best quad-core desktop CPUs [it has] offered”, to improve performance for gaming and multi-threaded applications. The top-of-the-line X4 9850 Black Edition also offers “Clock Multiplier Control” for “tuneable performance that gives gamers and enthusiasts scalability and customizable performance levels to run multiple processor-intensive applications simultaneously.” HP’s director of marketing in the US, Thi La, has announced that HP will be quick to offer X3 and X4 based computers, saying that: "As the worldwide leader in the PC industry, HP is pleased to be offering our customers the choice of AMD Phenom X3 and X4 based systems in our consumer desktop PCs. We are seeing a strong market demand for increased performance and multi-core capabilities." With quad-core set rapidly becoming the new standard for consumer level computing, whether from AMD or Intel, “as usage models expand to HD entertainment applications and gaming”, and believes its response “with innovations like the AMD Phenom X4 processor and the "Spider" quad-core enthusiast platform” enable it to command “both a high-performance and energy efficient market position at a compelling price.” Please read onto page 3 for details on the AMD Phenom X4 9100e quad-core processor, which AMD says is the world’s first to run at 65 watts. |
