Updated system software for Sony's Playstation 3 will deliver BD-Live compatibility just ahead of the company's first movies that include the enhanced functions.

System software v2.20 is set for release before the end of the month, with BD-Live movies expected from Sony in early April. Lionsgate has already released its first BD-Live titles.

BD-Live (aka Blu-Ray Disc Profile 2.0) includes such features as downloadable content (bonus scenes, subtitles and more) and interactive movie-based games that can be played across the Internet. The specific features supported by individual movies will vary.

Other features of the updated system software include the ability to transfer music and photo playlists to a PSP, the use of a PSP as a music remote control for the PS3, support for DivX and WMV files larger than 2G, 'resume play' for BDs that have been removed from the drive (equivalent to the feature found on many DVD players), an improved web browser including support for streaming video, and 'mosquito noise reduction' during movie playback.
