Kennedy also notes that “the really bizarre aspect to my "Workstation" 2008 experience is that, from a technical standpoint, it doesn't make sense - or at least, it shouldn't. With the same kernel (as of Vista SP1), the OSes should in fact behave similarly.”

So, while the debate rages over just how much better Windows Server 2008 is at delivering a better ‘workstation’ desktop OS experience than Vista SP1, Microsoft has probably already confirmed internally where Windows Server 2008 is indeed faster than Vista SP1.

If so, perhaps we might see a Vista SP2 speed update (or individual speed updates before any new service pack) appear sooner rather than later, giving long-suffering Vista users with a ‘need for speed’, the speed they need!

I'll admit - I really really really am not impressed by Vista for a few reasons but most of all because of how incredibly slow it is even with SP1. I read similar articles on the web so I decided to try Windows Server 2008 expecting it to suck as much as Vista but to my surprise it is nearly as snappy as XP is!!!

I've worked around every single install issue I've had with Windows Server 2008 as a desktop. I use sonicwall remote client, a laserjet, inkjet, scanner, bt keyboard and mouse, WM phone - so far everything works great including a number of things that aren't suppose to work such as Windows Live Mail, sidebar/gadgets. I have the aero interface turned on and my system is STILL snappy with Win2008.

I can't explain why Vista sucks so much and why every client I have who bought a system with Vista has paid me to upgrade them to XP even after SP1 for Vista came out but I can tell you that Windows 2008 actually is a pretty good OS!

Things I'd like them to put in R2 for 2008 deskop would be -

Media Center - although someone will probably find a way to install it by then.

Sidebars - just include them as an option so we don't have to use other sources - works fine.

Live Mail - for people using hotmail, outlook express isn't available any more, 2008 comes with Windows Mail but that doesn't support hotmail http anymore. WIndows Live Suite doesn't install so you can't install Live Mail directly - you have to get the MSI from a system you've installed it on and then copy it to your 2008 workstation to install.

Compatability Mode - why not make an option to trick your apps to think they are running on Vista - Bioshock requires XP compatability even though it runs on Vista.
