Windows Server 2008 in ‘workstation’ mode – a suitable Vista replacement? E-mail

According to a blog posting at the “exo.blog”, which says it is “the official blog for the editors and research staff and of the exo.performance.network (www.xpnet.com)”, Windows Server 2008 is “surprisingly” much faster than Windows Vista SP1.

The specific quote from their tests at their blog, which was conducted using identical equipment, was “we were understandably surprised when repeated test runs showed Windows Server 2008 outperforming Windows Vista w/SP1 by a margin of 11-17%.”

The exo.blog also lists which testing tools they used, so sceptical readers can try the test themselves on their own sets of otherwise identical equipment.

According to a blog from Infoworld’s Randall Kennedy called ‘Enterprise Desktop’, a blog entry called “Windows ‘Workstation’ 2008: One week later”, suggests there is a definite improvement.

Kennedy says that he used Windows Vista SP1, but once he heard about the ‘new’ workstation OS, he decided to give it a go, and ‘nuked’ his SP1 installation.

Kennedy says that: “So far, it's been a smooth ride. All of my core applications are working flawlessly, including SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2008 and Office 2007. In fact, outside of the multimedia issues I mentioned in my previous entry, I'd be hard pressed to find fault with the experience.”

The multimedia issues Kennedy talks about include the fact that Windows Server 2008 comes with no codecs to play DVD movies, something that is fixed by downloading third party codecs from the Internet, including software such as the multiplatform VLC Player.

Kennendy also notes that Visual Studio 2008 “flies” on ‘Workstation 2008’, something that surprised him as he was unimpressed by its performance running under Vista.

He also said that “VMware Workstation also runs better on 2008”, while the ‘new’ OS itself “never feels ‘sluggish’... or starts to ‘slow down’”, perhaps because of “better memory management or simply a more mature, polished code base”, meaning that “’Workstation’ 2008 delivers a level of robustness and consistency that Vista can't touch”.
