Just like the BBC in the UK, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has launched a range of online channels. The first will let you ‘catch up’ on broadcast programs, the second has a range of documentaries while the third will offer to sell you digital media – but it’s all still in ‘beta’.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is launching a series of dedicated online channels, rather than simply relying on podcasting and vodcasting to get its digital content out to Australians.

As the content with be geo-IP locked, only Australians will be able to enjoy the ABC’s new channels, although pod and vodcasts of selected show should continue to be available to all through iTunes and online.

The ABC’s Managing Director, Mark Scott, believes now is the time to “fully embrace the potential of digital media to expand the reach and appeal of the ABC’s content to its audiences”.

Scott also said that “the key to securing the ABC’s future as a public broadcaster in the digital age, was its ability to connect with its audiences with distinctive, innovative, Australian content in the emerging media space.”

The first service in the beta test is called ABC Playback, and is billed as an “internet television service” that offers “an authentic, full-screen television experience”, providing “catch-up TV so audiences can schedule the ABC’s top programs when they want”. It will feature three channels:

The first is called ‘ABC Catch-up’, and will offer “a mix of popular and specialist ABC programs that are screened during the previous week on [free-to-air broadcast channels] ABC1 or ABC2.”

The second is called ‘ABC Real’, and is “a channel with a selection of natural history programs and general documentaries”, while the third is called the ‘ABC Shop’, which will show “ABC programs available for purchase from the ABC Shop website.”

An ‘ABC Local’ site has also launched, and while this is not a full-screen broadcast TV channel, it does feature “60 new local online sites, with broadband content, feature stories, pictures, videos and audio reflecting local events and culture, news, weather and sports coverage.”
