According to Best International Managing Director, John McVicker, Talent International draws its data from two key jobs boards, with the principal jobs board being PBL's Seek and the other being Fairfax's MyCareer, unlike Olivier which draws its data from a wider range of jobs boards.

"Obviously there's a lot of duplication on jobs boards and Seek is bigger than all the other jobs boards put together," Mr McVicker told iTWire . "However, we check all the jobs boards such as (News Limited's) Career One to make sure our data is correct."

Mr McVicker also questioned Olivier's use of "seasonally adjusted" figures for February, traditionally one of the year's most robust jobs months.

"February is February and I can't see how using seasonally adjusted figures is relevant," he told iTWire.

The question now is who is correct? Fortunately there is a third opinion that we can turn to. According to E.L Consult, an executive search firm which publishes a monthly report called the Executive demand Index. This is a report that uses both jobs boards and newspaper ads to ascertain what the state of the market is for high end jobs across a range of sectors including IT&T.

As is the case with other sectors, high end roles for IT&T tend to be a leading indicator of how jobs will fare in the rest of the sector in coming months. According to the E.L consult findings, the information technology index bounced in February to a whopping rise 56%!
