With most of the mobile WiMAX spectrum in Australia now owned by TV companies - Austar and Seven Network (which recently purchased Unwired), NextWave's announcement of technology that delivers television and interactive services over mobile WiMAX network opens up interesting possibilities.

In particular it could strengthen their competition to Telstra's Next G service (and the upcoming expansions of the Optus and Vodafone HSPA networks): Telstra has been heavily promoting the BigPond Mobile TV service delivered over Next G and presently available in areas of Australia where there is no similar offering from other mobile operators. It could also significantly boost offerings available from Opel which has yet to reveal exactly what wireless technology it intends to use to bring broadband to regional Australia.

US based NextWave Wireless has launched MXtv, billing it as a breakthrough mobile multicast and broadcast technology that enables WiMAX operators to deliver a broad range of rich and personalised services including mobile TV, interactive media services, and digital audio without having to invest in new spectrum or additional radio access network equipment.

The company claims that its MXtv technology is completely compatible with the current 802.16e mobile iMAX standard and will "slash the cost of offering high-quality, mobile broadcast services to subscribers." NextWave will incorporate MXtv as a standard feature of its own line of WiMAX infrastructure products and has announced a joint development agreement with Chinese manufacturer Huawei Technologies under which Huawei will integrate the MXtv technology in its WiMAX base station and wireless broadband gateway.

According to NextWave CEO, Allen Salmasi, MXtv will enable WiMAX operators to move beyond mere carriage and garner additional revenue as content providers. "MXtv will provide WiMAX operators a unique opportunity to generate significant incremental revenue by delivering relevant and highly-targeted interactive advertising to customers while maintaining control over the nature and extent of content delivered over their network. It's a major win for WiMAX operators and a win for customers who will be able to enjoy the ultimate personalised mobile multimedia experience." CONTINUED
