Lenovo slims down – but not quite as much as Apple E-mail

The inbuilt screen is 13.3-inches like the MacBook Air and uses LED backlighting which Lenovo says is “75% more energy-efficient performance than traditional LCD displays.”

The X300’s processor is a 1.2Ghz low voltage Core 2 Duo, and while that’s slower than the 1.4Ghz or 1.6Ghz Core 2 Duo’s available in the MacBook Air, it’s not that much slower while also being less battery hungry.

Lenovo says they’ve built the X300 for ‘extreme durability’, saying its upper case “protects the valuable display through construction with advanced carbon and glass-fibre reinforced plastic, three times stronger than magnesium while being 60% lighter”.

They note that these “same materials are also used in building advanced aeroplanes such as the Airbus A380 and formula one racecars to help reinforce structure without additional weight”, while informing us that the notebook’s lower case is “built with magnesium and features an internal roll cage that reduces stress on the notebook by 15%.”

So... while being expensive, the Lenovo X300 is a brilliant example of the PC world being able to create exciting thin notebook computers that have all the standard features business users need on a day-to-day basis.

It’s clearly also, like the MacBook Air, just the start of an even thinner future, just as we’ve seen mp3 players get thinner and thinner – something Apple has played a very large part in.

Both the MacBook Air and the Lenovo X300 have their place in today’s world, and both are likely to be quite popular with their intended target markets of consumer and business – although you can be certain there will be plenty of crossover between the two markets anyway.

It’s only 2008 – how thin, light and powerful will the computers of 2010 be? They’re being designed and dreamt up today – but it really doesn’t matter. If you live in 2008 and want thin now – there’s never been so thin and so powerful at once.

Thin really is in – and it’s only just the beginning!
