The Vista SP1 saga: the best ad for Mac and Linux yet? PDF E-mail

First, it was a 5 year delay for Vista minus plenty of features, drivers and software compatibility. A year later, Vista SP1 ‘launches’, but few can get it yet. Then two SP1 pre-updates launch, only to have many reports of endless rebooting. What more can Microsoft do to convince people to try a Mac – or Linux?

I wouldn’t exactly call the delay of Vista SP1 a ‘comedic’ situation, but the whole thing seems to have gone from comedic to shambolic in less than three weeks since the February 4 announcement that Vista SP1 had gone to RTM.

To start with, Vista SP1 went to RTM, but almost nobody could download it, as Microsoft decided to make people wait for several weeks while they ironed out some bugs.

At the time I advised people NOT to download it until it was officially available to download through Vista’s Windows Update, even though an official download location, from Microsoft, became available, although not intended for the public, and for my efforts I was admonished by a couple of readers that SP1 was fine to download.

Still, as Microsoft itself was advising not to download it, suggesting that readers stay away seemed a pretty good policy to me – and clearly, it still is.

It turned out that there were some driver re-installation issues that SP1 was causing, with SP1 at fault and not the drivers, which Microsoft said weren’t the cause of the issue

Then we had the scenario of two pre-SP1 updates that Microsoft pushed out to users, specifically so they wouldn’t have the driver re-installation issues that had been reported.

Sadly, what happened for some was that one of these pre-SP1 patches has caused an unknown number of Windows systems to go bad, suffering an endless reboot loop.

So, what has Microsoft said regarding the new pre-SP1 endless reboot problem, what are the solutions that Microsoft TechNet subscribers have found to fix the problem (which Microsoft has temporarily ‘solved’ by removing that pre-SP1 update from Windows Update), and why do I say – if it’s not already obvious – that all of this is helping the Mac and Linux causes to no end? Please read on...
