The first of what could be two dozen community health services to choose InterSystems' TrakCare healthcare information system have gone live in Victoria.TrakCare has been implemented by the (Melbourne) Western Region Health Centre and the Bendigo Community Health Services as part of the Victorian state government's $A360 million HealthSMART program. The software should go live at a further 10 agencies by the end of 2008, with another 12 likely to follow suit during 2009. Western Region Health Centre CEO Clare Amies said that its clients now only need to register once for most services, regardless of which of the 13 sites they choose to visit. Not only does this make for a better experience when visiting a centre (who likes to be asked the same questions repeatedly?), it also allows the agency to make better use of its resources in meeting community needs. The potential for data sharing with other health resources in the state is also significant. "If one of our dieticians creates a plan for a client with diabetes, for example, the plan could automatically be sent with client permission to their general practitioner," Amies said. TrakCare is "one of the most technologically advanced lines in health care," said Denis Tebbutt, managing director for InterSystems in Australia, adding that the company's technology is already in use in the US by organisations including Kaiser Permanente, the Veterans Administraiton, and Partners HealthCare. These bodies typically have 20,000 users or more, making them similar in size to the health authorities within Australian states. CONTINUED |
