Microsoft have delivered their keynote at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, amongst the information delivered, a even larger focus on the online experience with Xbox 360 and critical snippets about Gears of War 2 and Fable 2.

John Schappert from Microsoft began the GDC08 keynote with some big numbers.  One billion achievements unlocked, US$250 million spent of content for games and Xbox Live Arcade games.

Halo 3 uploads are daily outstripping YouTube by 30 percent with 100,000 user created videos being generated per day.

But Schappert sees the real community benefit of the connected gaming vision of Microsoft in products such as XNA, the development toolset that has been downloaded over 800,000 times since launch day 18 months ago.  “Microsoft mission” Schappert said “was to do everything we can to break down the barrier between the creators and consumers."

According to XNA architect Chris Satchel, Community Games developers will have an Xbox Live like profile called a “creator identity”, enabling budding games developers to upload their creation for peer review, and then finally make it available to the Xbox online community for download and sharing.

This will be known as Community Arcade, and we should see more towards the end of 2008

The intention is to allow game creators to jump platform, from PC to Xbox 360 and even to the Microsoft Zune media player, the first real serious word from Microsoft around portable gaming.  .

Then there were the upcoming anticipated commercial game announcements, such as Gears of War 2 – click on for more.
