Microsoft is no longer automatically distributing via Windows Update a patch that must be installed prior to Windows Vista SP1.

The update, described in KB937287, changes the Vista installation software, and is required to install or remove Vista SP1.

In some circumstances - which have yet to be determined - the installer gets stuck in a seeming endless reboot cycle.

"So far, we've been able to determine that this problem only affects a small number of customers in unique circumstances," observed Nick White, Windows Vista product manager. "We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update available again shortly after we address the issue."

The description of the problem suggests the fault might not be in the updated software but in its installation mechanism. Furthermore, some users are reporting that their computers try to reinstall the update after it has apparently been successfully installed.

Microsoft has asked affected users to provide copies of the relevant log files.

The method suggested for getting affected systems running again is to boot from a Vista DVD and carrying out a system restore.
