Showing the world they are not out of the video player race, Toshiba say that “this decision will not impact on Toshiba’s commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organisation with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries”.

Toshiba say that they want to stay pals with all the movie studios and other IT companies, too, saying that “Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP”.

Toshiba end by saying that the HD DVD business has generated all kinds of assets they can still sell the world, aiming to show the end of HD DVD isn’t a complete loss.

They do this by saying that: “Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilising the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD”.

Toshiba Australia will hold a press release on Wednesday February 20th, 2008, at 11am (Sydney, Australia time), with Mark Whittard, the General Manager ISD of Toshiba Australia, to further delve into the reasons why Toshiba has announced the end of HD DVD and to answer journalist and analyst questions, and we’ll have a follow up report on that after the event.
