Blu-ray Xbox 360? E-mail

Microsoft does not seem overly concerned about the imminent demise of HD DVD as a high definition disc format.  Having backed HD DVD, especially with their Xbox 360 add on HD DVD player, why the sudden ‘laid back’ nature with the format war?  Could it be there is yet another revamp of the Xbox 360 waiting in the wings? Perhaps with a Blu-ray drive.

The latest news on Toshiba is that they deny they will soon be announcing the scrapping of the HD DVD format, with a recent gameindustry.biz report quoting a statement; "The media reported that Toshiba will discontinue its HD DVD business. Toshiba has not made any announcement concerning this. Although Toshiba is currently assessing its business strategies, no decision has been made at this moment,"

But if the growing media tide is to be believed, Blu-ray is on the verge of winning the format war.

Much of this perceived success can be attributed to the increasing market penetration of Sony’s Blu-ray equipped PlayStation 3,

So rival Microsoft, with the DVD 9 equipped Xbox 360 and optional (and lately, price reduced) HD DVD drive should be worried, shouldn’t they?  Well a recent report from gamespot quotes a Microsoft statement somewhat to the contrary;

"We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace.  As we've long stated, we believe it is games that sell consoles, and Xbox 360 continues to have the largest next-gen games library with the most exclusives and best selling games in the industry." The statement said.

According to the report, Microsoft are, like the rest of us, awaiting a possible official announcement about HD DVD’s future, from Toshiba before commenting further.

It is also possible that Microsoft, regardless of the format’s life expectancy, might simply jump ship to Blu-ray with the Xbox 360.

The rumours are building, with technology lifestyle website Smarthouse reporting on Microsoft insider information.  According to Smarthouse; “Insiders at Microsoft in the USA have told SmartHouse that Microsoft has already configured a standalone Blu-ray player that can be connected into an Xbox 360 and that subject to internal marketing and sales approvals the model could be on sale within 3 months.”
