Audio and video clips from American Idol are set to debut on the iTunes Store.

Songs will be available at the customary $US0.99 following this week's show, with the full video of the Top 12 finalist performances arriving on March 11 for $US1.99.

Avid viewers that have already settled on their favourite performers will be able to preorder for automatic download the day after the show, .

"We have some truly outstanding talent this year, and by working with Apple and iTunes, we're giving viewers another great way to enjoy America's brightest new stars from Idol," said Simon Fuller, creator of American Idol and founder of production company 19 Entertainment.

The American Idol content is exclusive to the iTunes Store, and will only be offered to customers in the US and Canada.

"We've created a special section on the iTunes Store for Idol fans with an incredible array of music and video performances from television's most popular show," said Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of iTunes.

"We think American Idol viewers are going to love the ability to purchase and download Idol performances from iTunes."

American Idol is currently rating strongly, following a slight slip during the previous season. The absence of first-run drama and comedy shows as a result of the writers' strike means it has less competition, but even a compilation show aired earlier this month won the night.
