Orbcomm operates a network of 29 low earth orbit satellites designed specifically to provide low bandwidth packet data services (2.4kbps uplink and 4.8kbps downlink). Unlike most commercial satellite networks which operate at frequencies of several gigahertz, Orbcomm operates in the VHF band 137-138MHz downlink and 148-150MHz uplink, just slightly above the frequencies used by commercial FM radio broadcasters. The company installed its first earth station in Australia, at Rutherglen in Victoria just a year ago, enabling it to provide near real-time services for Australian and New Zealand customers. |
