Page 3 of 3 Skype can add to their well deserved hype with the announcement that Skype has won a ‘highly commended’ award in the “Best Mobile Handset or Device Category”, awarded by the “Global Mobile Awards panel at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona”. Villu Arak said that the judges, who were all industry experts, analysts, journalists and academics, had announced that: “The Skypephone is an innovative partnership between Hutchison 3 and Skype. In addition to the headline Skype service, the phone offers extremely good value for money with a wide range of features not previously seen at this price point.” The 3 Skypephone, available in Australia, the UK and a number of other countries with the 3 Hutchison network is in operation, was announced in late October 2007, with Arak saying the phone has “been enjoying an excellent ride in the hands of Skype-loving consumers and it sure feels nice to see the industry recognize the innovation that this handset embodies”. While Arak didn’t mention all the fuss over the iPhone and Google’s Android platform during the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, he must have been thinking about it when he wrote that: “Incidentally, the 3 Skypephone was also one of the main attractions among journalists, bloggers and other visitors to the Skype stand at last Sunday’s Showstoppers”. Arak ended by saying that: “Even as you see more and more Skype-enabled mobile and wireless handsets pop up over time, the 3 Skypephone will continue to play a special role in showing people what’s possible — and what to expect”. So, the level of Skype hype will no doubt rise even further this year, as Skype aims to better their service even further, and no doubt continue as the brightest star in the eBay empire, as every other telecommunications company besides 3 Hutchison continues trying to either fight, or emulate, Skype’s undeniable success.
