Skype hype to soar as 100 billion minute milestone reached E-mail

Of course it is important to remember that to make a free Skype-to-Skype call, you used to need a relatively modern computer with a broadband connection, with a microphone and speakers or a microphone headset, items which decidedly aren't free.

But most people who already have a computer have an appropriate broadband connection, and microphone headsets are cheap, so once you have that initial setup sorted, which plenty of people do, using Skype can dramatically cut your phone bill, or even potentially eliminate it if all of the people you call also use Skype.

In addition, making and receiving Skype calls on your computer, whether for voice or video calls, does use up some of your bandwidth which you are paying for each month.

But unless you are a regular user of Skype's video calling capabilities, especially at the new 'high quality' standard with appropriate Logitech 2 megapixel webcams, the total bandwidth usage is small, only taking up a small portion of your monthly download limit.

This effectively means your Skype calls are 'free', as they fall within the costs you are already paying for your broadband connection, instead of adding to your costs in the way calls made on a PSTN landline or on a mobile phone can add to your costs, chewing up your minutes if nothing else for those on a 'capped' PSTN or mobile plan.

To top it off, Using Skype from late 2007 also no longer requires a computer with a broadband connection, but simply a 3 Skypephone, something we'll go into more detail on shortly in page 3.

Arak then thanked all Skype users for “getting us where we are, folks”, and asked us all to “keep talking” so that Skype’s next milestone would be “one billion, gagillion, fafillion, shabolubalu million illion yillion Skype-to-Skype minutes”.

So, what about the award for the recently release 3 Skypephone, a mobile phone that set a new paradigm to work on both the 3G network to call other regular phones, and to make and receive Skype-to-Skype phone calls with anyone else either using a 3 Skypephone, or Skype on their computers or other Skype compatible devices?

Please read onto page 3 to see why the judges loved it!
