Microsoft chose Valentine's Day to announce a corporate love-in involving 14 senior executive promotions.

"Along with attracting world-class talent from outside the company, one of my top priorities is growing Microsoft’s existing leadership team," said Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer.

"Each of these executives will play a critical role in leading Microsoft into the future," he added.

Seven of the changes are promotions from corporate vice president to senior vice president. They are:

Chris Capossela, senior vice president, information worker product management group.

Kurt DelBene, senior vice president, Office business platform group.

Antoine Leblond, senior vice president, Office productivity applications group.

Andy Lees, senior vice president, mobile communications business. Lees was previously corporate vice president of the server & tools marketing and solutions group, and takes over from Pieter Knook, who has left the company "to pursue new opportunities" (actually a new job with Vodafone).

Satya Nadella, senior vice president, search, portals & advertising group. His responsibilities have been expanded to include MSN programming and engineering.

S. Somasegar, senior vice president, developer division. Somasegar also oversees Microsoft's India and Canada development centres.

Bill Veghte, senior vice president, online services & Windows business group. His responsibilities now include all end-user business strategy, sales and marketing across Windows Client, Windows Live, MSN and Search. Veghte also continues to share responsibility for OEM sales.
