Despite the release of a new version of Office for the Mac, the older Office 2004 for Mac is hardly dead yet. Indeed, Microsoft is still set to pump out security updates for some time to come, especially given the fact there are plenty of older Macs out there which run Office 2004 far better than they’ll ever run the Intel-optimised Office 2008.

The latest security update for Mac Office 2004 has arrived from Microsoft, fixing two security flaws that could put users at risk of having remote code executed on their Mac computers.

Given the fact many Mac users feel invulnerable to Internet threats, this latest security update is a stark reminder that the Mac platform is also under attack from hackers, and while they may not have had any spectacular successes that the general public is aware of, the threat is real – or such updates would be unnecessary.

Microsoft has rated one of the threats as ‘critical’, while the other receives the slightly less alarming rating of ‘important’ – but either, if exploited, could give hackers a chance to mess with your computer, your data and your life.

Microsoft’s Office for Mac software does load an update checker which should automatically be set to check for new updates, but there is a chance some users may have turned it off, leading us to warn Office 2004 users to ensure their Office software – and indeed all their software – is regularly updated.

However it’s not just security patches that the latest update offers: there’s good news for Mac Office 2004 users struggling to get Entourage talking with Microsoft’s Exchange Server.

Long known to be vastly inferior to Microsoft’s own Outlook for Windows when talking to Exchange servers, the update promises ‘improved stability’ when Entourage is used with Exchange Server.

Of course some Mac Office users wish Microsoft would just bite the damn bullet and port Outlook across to the Mac platform, but the realists among us realise that Microsoft wants to give users as little reason as possible to jump to the superior Mac platform.

Keeping Outlook off the Mac platform is both clever and devious, don’t you think? Please read onto page 2...
