Nokia’s N96: the N95 update we’ve been waiting for! E-mail

When the Nokia’s N95 was released, I remember wondering how good a future N96 would be. Well, we can wonder no more – it has arrived with some very impressive specs, but you won’t be able to buy one until Q3 2008.

The Nokia N96 has been previewed at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, with plenty of features that should keep Nokia the world’s No.1 phone (ok, ok multimedia computer) manufacturer despite the Apple iPhone.

Nokia says the N96 is “truly optimized for video and TV”, coming with a 2.8" screen, a huge 16GB of internal memory supporting up to 12,000 songs, a MicroSD card slot to boost your storage by up to an additional 8GB (for a total of 24GB in phone), a 5 megapixel digital camera with Carl Zeiss lens and that ‘DVD-like’ video recording, 3.5G HSDPA, and GPS (with AGPS as well for fast a GPS lock and a new photo geotagging feature).

Taking a breath, there’s more: inbuilt Wi-Fi, a digital TV DVB-H tuner with an automatically updating program guide (in selected markets), an FM radio, an Internet radio application, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0 and a flip out little ‘kickstand’ on the back of the N96 to make it easier to enjoy ‘hands free viewing’. Actually there’s even more still, and we’ll go through these features over the course of this article.

The 3.5G HSDPA inside the N96 is rated as being compatible with the 2100Mhz and 900Mhz bands, so it won’t work for Australians on the 850Mhz Next G 3.5G network from our dominant telco, Telstra, but given the fact Nokia made an 850Mhz N95, an 850Mhz N96 is surely on the cards so it will work on Telstra’s – and AT&T’s (in the US) 850Mhz 3.5G network in the future.

So far, it sounds like an excellent upgrade to the N95, and while I had expected Nokia might have included a higher megapixel camera in this model, 5 megapixels is still nothing to be sneezed at, especially on a phone (ok, ok – especially on a handheld, pocketable multimedia computer).

Jonas Geust, manager of Nokia's Explore category said that: "In 2007, the Nokia N95 became an icon of convergence of Internet and mobility. With over 7 million units sold to date, the N95 has changed the way people use their mobile device. The Nokia N96 we introduced today builds on the success of N95, further enhancing the experience. Through the power of the Internet, video and TV are becoming even more prevalent in people's lives. With its large, bright screen, and a range of high-speed connectivity options and the enhanced Nokia Video Center, the new Nokia N96 is a personal window to entertainment."

So, just what else does has Nokia packed into the highly advanced N96? There's plenty more, so please read on to page 2!
