Naked DSL gives consumers the ability to use their copper phone line to access a DSL service – without needing to pay Telstra’s line rental fees. The pricing’s good, there’s bundled VoIP and uploads aren’t counted, so is Gotalk’s Naked DSL a sight for sore eyes?
Gotalk says that Telstra’s traditional fixed-line telephone and data business, which still contributes 50 per cent of its profits, is potentially set to fall even further with the arrival of their Naked DSL service launched this week.

Aimed at all other DSL providers, whether they offer ‘naked DSL’ services or not, Gotalk’s new ADSL2+ broadband Internet offering is aggressively priced, comes with a bundled VoIP plan, requires no line rental fees to be paid, and unlike iiNet’s naked DSL service (or Telstra’s regular DSL services for that matter) doesn’t count uploads towards a user’s download limit.

Gotalk’s entry-level ‘Great Escape 9’ plan costs AUD $49.95 per month, offering 3GB of download at peak times and 6GB of download in off peak times. The Great Escape 36 plan costs $69.95 per month and comes with 12GB peak/24GB off peak, while the high-end Great Escape 60 plan costs $79.95 per month and offers downloads of 20GB peak and 40GB in off peak times.

For those wondering, off peak times are 1am to 6am.

Gotalk CEO Steve Picton said that: “Customers can now throw away the expense of a telephone connection and switch to one of Gotalk’s ‘Great Escape’ plans to get the full speed of ADSL2+ and save. A major point of difference is that unlike our competitors, Gotalk only counts downloads in the data quota, so customers aren’t penalised for the amount of data they upload”.

Gotalk have also launched an ‘Escape with the lot’ package for $95 per month that offers ADSL 2+ broadband with 9GB of downloads (3GB peak/6GB off peak) and the same benefits of no line rental or uploads being counted, while offering up to 300 local calls per month, up to 300 national calls per month, and up to 100 mobile calls per month (or 500 minutes).

The VoIP package also offers free international calls to 30 countries, 20c calls to 30 countries and 50c calls to 50 countries, with these included calls limited to 100 calls or 3000 minutes per month.
