Apple updates iLife, extends Web Gallery E-mail

In addition to its Aperture revamp, Apple has released an update for its iLife suite (which includes iPhoto) and delivered enhancements to the Web Gallery feature of the .Mac online service.

The iLife update - iLife Support 8.2 - is a 9.7M download, modest compared with this week's Mac OS X 10.5.2 updater, but still a fair size for anyone still using dialup.

The Apple website is customarily terse about what the update actually delivers: "This update supports system software components shared by all iLife ’08 applications to improve their stability and performance."

The 'read me' notes are just a little more forthcoming, adding "This update also supports important bug fixes for Aperture 2.0."

An examination of the installer package's contents suggests it delivers changes to the media browser and RAW camera support, as well as the changes in the use of Quartz Composer in QuickTime, Image IO, and (when running under Tiger) Image Kit.

The changes to .Mac Web Gallery features are largely dependent on the use of iPhoto 7.1.2, iMovie 7.1.1 and Aperture 2.0.

Web Galleries can now include either full-size JPEG files or save storage space and bandwidth by adjusting to give full quality when printed at 16x20in. Individual albums can also be published without appearing on the gallery's home page, which is a convenient way of sharing images with an invited audience (though it does not provide any real security).
