Microsoft says Vista SP1 not delayed because of bad drivers E-mail

Windows Vista Team Blogger Mike Nash has stated in his blog that dodgy drivers weren’t the reason why SP1’s availability was delayed, while in related news, the two pre-SP1 updates to ensure smooth SP1 installation are now downloading to Vista machines across the world.

When Vista SP1 was sent to RTM back on February 4, 2008, many in the tech industry were amazed that Microsoft was stopping most customers from downloading SP1 until sometime in March, with TechNet and MSDN subscribers particularly upset, given their highly tech-savvy status and ability to fix problems.

At the time, the reason why seemed to be because of dodgy drivers on certain computers supplied by manufacturers, with those drivers causing SP1 grief, but it turns out the drivers were never bad. Instead, SP1’s ‘re-installation’ of those drivers during the update process caused the problem.

Mike Nash, the chief blogger of the Windows Vista Team Blog, has set the record straight on the driver issue, and has said that SP1 as it stands is ‘final’.

That said, if Microsoft does find future issues, they’d just be fixed by another update of some kind to be delivered via Windows Update, but even so, it’s good to know that Microsoft considers SP1 absolutely finished and is now just presumably preparing themselves for an almighty download onslaught.

Before we get to what Mike said, it should be noted that SP1 was also said to require a couple of updates to be installed on Vista computers first, to ensure a smooth installation, and smooth uninstallation should users have wanted to do that, something I spoke about in an article yesterday on the issue uncovering a way to download SP1 anyway, which I advised general consumers to avoid for now.

However those two updates have now downloaded to my own Vista computer, meaning I’m ready to get SP1, but like most everyone else am still waiting for Vista to tell me the update is available, despite knowing a way to download it from Microsoft anyway, even though they still don’t really want us all to do it yet, because I only want to get the 32-bit version of the update, and not the (for me) pointless 64-bit version, wasting 500MB of download for nothing.

So, getting back to the supposed driver issue that was said to be the cause behind the delay of SP1 in the first place, what has Mike Nash now told us? Please read onto page 2!
