Apple’s Aperture 2 continues to challenge Adobe E-mail

Mac users wanting more from their digital photos than iPhoto can provide can now step up to Aperture 2, a major upgrade with a better interface, faster photo browsing and enhanced image processing.

Although Apple includes the iPhoto application from their iLife suite with every Mac sold, the next step up in photo management and manipulation from Apple is their Aperture software, now reaching the version 2 milestone.

Calling it ‘groundbreaking photo editing and management software’, Apple says there are over 100 new features to make it ‘faster, easier to use and more powerful’, coupled with a ‘streamlined user interface and entirely new image processing engine’, with ‘new imaging tools for highlight recovery, colour vibrancy, local contrast definition, soft-edged retouching, vignetting and RAW fine-tuning’.

In addition, Apple makes sharing photos easy, if you’re a member of the paid .Mac service, allowing users to ‘directly post their portfolios on the .Mac Web Gallery for viewing on the web, iPod touch and Apple TV’.

Rob Schoeben, Apple’s vice president of Applications Product Marketing, said that: “Many of the most respected photographers on assignment all over the world trust Aperture to organise, edit and deliver their images. With its simpler interface and lower price, anyone can take full advantage of Aperture’s power.”

For its press release, Apple was able to get a couple of professional photographers to sing Aperture’s praises, with Sports Illustrated contributing photographer, David Bergman saying that: “At the end of the day, it’s all about the quality of the image. Even before I begin making adjustments, Aperture’s new RAW processing gives me better images with more visible detail and better colour rendering than any other program I’ve tested.”

The second photographer endorsement comes from Bob Davis, PDN Top Knots Wedding Photographer 2007, saying that: “I used to have so much stress about post-production on a shoot, having to juggle multiple applications to make sure they all worked. With Aperture that’s no longer a factor. I can do everything all in one application.”

According to Apple, Aperture 2’s new, easier user interface is designed to be more intuitive and accessible, letting users navigate between Viewer and Browser modes with a single key command.

Screen real estate is maximised for images with an all-in-one heads up display that allows users to toggle between library, metadata and adjustment controls in a single tabbed inspector, while the All Projects view, modelled after iPhoto’s Events view, provides a poster photo for every project and the ability to quickly skim through the photos inside.

Aperture 2 is naturally iPhoto aware, with an integrated iPhoto Browser offering direct access to all the events and images in the iPhoto library.

So, what else does Apple say is improved in Aperture 2? Please read on.
