Page 3 of 3 Well, just because there’s a way to get around Microsoft’s decision to withhold SP1 from the general public a bit longer, it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to race off and get it, even though it's inevitable that plenty of people will race off and start downloading, even if that download is only "pseudo-legal" through the OEM site or just by downloading it from the direct link on the previous page.Featured Whitepaper

Yes, I know what reader Shinjiro says, which you can read below, as does another reader who emailed iTWire's editor, Stan Beer, to say this article is 'incorrect' because they believe SP1 can be safely downloaded now. However I still believe that, for the vast majority of Vista users out there who are more general consumers than technology professionals, the best course of action is to just wait until Windows Vista notifies you that SP1 is available to download sometime in March, whereupon it can be download safely, and only once for your 32bit or 64 bit system, instead of twice. And that is of course another issue - if you have 500MB of spare bandwidth to burn and don't mind getting a version of the update that you will just end up deleting, and you are confident in what you are doing, then you have probably already ignored my advice and have downloaded SP1. I'd also be a lot happier if reader Shinjiro and the other reader I mentioned earlier were official Microsoft representatives telling me that it's ok to download SP1 now, but of course, were that the case, there'd be no need to wait until March and SP1 would be available to download now! So, I maintain that the whole purpose of SP1 is to make Vista better, faster and more reliable, and if you finally have a smoothly running Vista system after many recent ‘reliability updates’ – why risk stuffing things up by jumping the SP1 gun, especially if you're an everyday consumer, and not a highly computer literate tech pro? |
