LaserJet printers purchased between January 21 and April 30 will be backed by carbon offsets the emissions associated with the devices' estimated power consumption over their useful lifetime.

The calculation is based on a usage profile published as part of the US Energy Star program, CO2 conversion factors published by the Australian Greenhouse Office (an Australian government body) and an estimated useful life of five years.

The offsets are being purchased from Climate Positive, one of (if not the) first providers of tax deductible carbon offsets in Australia.

Climate Positive has invested in one landfill gas generation facility in Tasmania and two in Western Australia, as well as a wind farm in Victoria. Between them, the projects produce over 16 megawatts, sufficient to power nearly 15,000 average households.

"We feel that a long-term investment in renewable energy really complements [other programs] at HP," said Annukka Dickens, environment manager at Hewlett-Packard South Pacific.

The scheme requires purchasers to download a clim form and submit it by mid May. HP will then purchase the carbon credits, paying administration and management costs separately. Customers then receive a certificate showing their participation in the scheme.

The program initially applies only to LaserJets purchased in Australia and New Zealand, but Dickens said there is a possibility of it being extended to other geographies and HP products.
