Microsoft has agreed to acquire Danger, the company behind the Sidekick phone popular with many younger users in the US as well as other consumer handsets.

While not revealing any specific plans, Microsoft has hinted that it will combine Danger's services with its own entertainment and mobile services.

"Microsoft is a global leader with our Windows Mobile software and expanding mobile services," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division.

"The addition of Danger serves as a perfect complement to our existing software and services, and also strengthens our dedication to improving mobile experiences centered around individuals and what they like," added Bach.

It seems possible that Microsoft will in the longer term merge Sidekick and Windows Mobile, but apparently Danger will initially continue on its current course despite becoming a Microsoft subsidiary.

"Danger continues to provide an effortless and fun mobile experience for consumers," said Henry Nothhaft, chairman and CEO of Danger. "Now by combining our uncompromised application software and powerful back-end service with Microsoft, we can expand our innovative service offerings even further and take mobility to a new level."

T-Mobile has exploited celebrity power in its Sidekick marketing, with Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Hilary Duff, Mischa Barton, Amanda Bynes, Nicole Richie and Eva Longoria attending the launch event for the Sidekick 3 in 2006. And that was after a teenager received an 11-month custodial sentence for reportedly hacking into Hilton's Sidekick account and releasing the contents of her address book, email address lists, photographs, notes and correspondence.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
