Even more interesting is the suggestion that the price drop will be announced during the expected Feb 26 launch event for the iPhone/iPod Touch SDK, the ‘software development kit’ that will allow developers to create approved third party applications for Apple’s rather touching handheld platform. This would ensure the SDK event generates even more publicity than you’d already expect, but the question must be asked: would Apple do this so soon after launching a 16GB iPhone and 32GB iPod Touch? Of course, Apple has form here, after dropping the price of the iPhone by US $200 literally only weeks after introducing the iPhone in the first place, an event which generated so much angst amongst early adopters that Apple offered to refund US $200 to anyone who’d purchased an iPhone in the 14 days before the price drop and offered a US $100 to be spent at the Apple store to anyone who’d bought outside that 14 day window. 9to5Mac’s tipster has also suggested that the 8GB iPod Touch will also be disappearing from sale, much like the 4GB iPhone before it, and while there was no mention of the 8GB iPhone also being scrapped, the speculation is that it too will face the chopping block. While we’re in speculation mode, there’s also the 3G iPhone to consider. Are these price drops, if they are indeed real, being made to clear out old stock in preparation for the launch of the much desired 3G iPhone? 9to5Mac predicts we’ll see a 3G iPhone in May, and also suggests that the iPod Nano range will also see increases in storage capacity due to lower memory costs.
