Apple launches 16GB iPhone and 32GB iPod Touch E-mail

It might be ‘Super Tuesday’ in the US, but Apple fans won’t remember it for political reasons, as Apple has finally upgraded the capacity of the iPhone to a welcome 16GB, and have boosted the iPod Touch to a whopping 32GB – but there’s no 3G iPhone yet.

Anyone waiting for a ‘next generation’ iPhone has just had their prayers answered – sort of. No, it’s not a 3G iPhone, but one that doubles the existing 8GB capacity to 16GB, showing that larger capacity iPhones are surely on the way, and raising the chances that the upcoming 3G iPhone will come with at least 32GB of storage.

That’s an easy prediction to make, as Apple’s iPod Touch now sports that magical 32GB figure, finally bringing the iPod Touch into the realm once enjoyed only by hard disk equipped iPods, although the storage capacity is still far from the 160GB seen in the iPod Classic.

Apple are pricing the 16GB iPhone at US $499, while the 8GB model remains priced at US $399.

The 32GB iPod Touch retails for US $499 (or AUD $629), with the 16GB model stays priced at the existing US $399 (or AUD $499), as does the 8GB version at US $299 (or AUD $399).

“For some users, there’s never enough memory,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing. “Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary Wi-Fi mobile device in the world.”

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPod and iPhone Product Marketing said that: “For some users, there’s never enough memory. Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary mobile phone and best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world.”

Rather hilariously, in Australia, Greg Joswiak loses his title of 'iPhone Product Marketing VP' - the Australian press release only states he is the 'VP of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing'. C'mon Apple - you don't need to 'hide' the fact that Joswiak looks after the iPhone too, just because you don't sell it here yet. The Internet is, ah, global... and we've all heard of the iPhone.

Apple says the 32GB iPod Touch is now available worldwide, while the 16B iPhone is available through the Apple’s online store, their retail stores and AT&T stores.

The 16GB iPhone is expected to be sold internationally where iPhones are already on sale, although Apple’s US press release only mentions ‘worldwide’ for the iPod Touch.

So, when Steve Jobs said during his Macworld 2008 keynote that there were ’50 more weeks’ to go in 2008, implying that there’d be plenty more announcements to come, he clearly wasn’t joking.

If only the 16GB iPhone had been the much awaited 3G model... and if only iPhones of any type were officially sold here in Australia – and everywhere else in the world Apple products are sold.

I guess we just have to wait a bit longer – there’s now only around 46 weeks to go, and one of those weeks surely has 3G iPhone written all over it at Apple HQ - and Apple Australia won't need to 'hide' the fact that the iPhone exists in Australia, even if Apple don't officially sell it here yet.
