Page 2 of 3 Universal say the movies they will launch were some of 2007’s ‘most acclaimed movies’, but only provide a very short list, far from the ‘at least’ 20 titles currently promised. And that’s it. No other titles are listed, but there are clearly at least 15 other titles that Universal have on the books for HD DVD, but given that Charlie Wilson’s War, a movie that is still in the theatres, isn’t due until the 4th of June this year, perhaps Universal are hedging their bets. After all, six months is a long time, and who knows what will happen in that time? Universal’s press release then goes on to talk up HD DVD’s feature set, and talks specifically about how HD DVD’s interactive features will improve the movie viewing experience. Universal say that “HD DVD is loaded with signature features and state-of-the-art technology, including real-time interactivity, picture in picture, scene sharing, and web-enabled bonus content, giving viewers the power to go deeper into the action”. We’re also reminded that “HD DVD players are the most affordable option”, something truer than ever given the recent massive price cuts, and also remind us that HD DVD players can upscale existing DVD movies to ‘near high def picture quality’ over HDMI. Then we’re reminded about HD DVD’s ability to provide ‘interactive experiences’.
